The Humphrey School of Public Affairs’ Distinguished Carlson Lecture series welcomes Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the most recognized and influential figures in public health and policy in modern times. A short Q&A moderated by Cathy Wurzer, host of Morning Edition and Minnesota Now on MPR News, will follow the lecture.

About Keynote Speaker, Dr. Anthony Fauci

Anthony Fauci, MD, is one of the most recognized and influential figures in public health and policy in modern times. His 50-year career in public service was bookended by the HIV/AIDs and COVID-19 pandemics.

He was the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for 38 years until his retirement in Dec 2022. During that time, Dr. Fauci oversaw an extensive research portfolio devoted to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious and immune-mediated diseases.

As a key advisor to seven presidents and their administrations, Dr. Fauci led medical and public health preparedness and treatments against emerging infectious disease threats, including HIV/AIDS, pandemic influenza, Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19.

Throughout his career, Dr. Fauci has maintained an unwavering devotion to science, concern and empathy for those suffering from disease, and a human-centered pragmatism that ultimately led to extraordinary results.

Dr. Fauci’s memoir, On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service, published this year, chronicles his life story from his childhood in Brooklyn to his career as one of the most influential figures in public health.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Science by President George W. Bush, and has received numerous additional awards for his scientific and global health accomplishments. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Fauci received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. Following his retirement from the NIAID, Dr. Fauci joined Georgetown University as a Distinguished University Professor in the School of Medicine. He also holds an appointment with the University’s McCourt School of Public Policy.

About the Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series

For nearly four decades, the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, with support from Carlson and the Carlson Family Foundation, has presented the Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series, bringing to Minnesota world-renowned speakers to participate in a forum dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the most important policy issues of the day. The series began in 1980 with a gift from Curtis L. Carlson to honor his late friend, Hubert H. Humphrey, and to “contribute to the intellectual life of the greater Twin Cities community by sponsoring lively forums of broad interest.”
